According to Psychology Today, addiction is a condition that results when a person uses a substance (e.g., alcohol, drugs) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that can be pleasurable. If overused, these actions can become compulsive and interfere with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work relationships, or health. This interference develops over time. The individual may be unaware that their behavior is causing problems for themselves and others. It is only after a period of time when the problems become difficult to excuse or cover-up that awareness creeps in.


There is no universal type of, or cure for addiction. Each individual experiencing problems associated with some type of compulsive behavior is different. This means that help must be tailored to each individual. One size does not fit all.

We use an approach that attempts to meet the individual where they are at the moment they courageously seek help. This approach is called Solution Focused Brief Therapy.

This approach is about being brief (what is necessary for each individual) and focusing on developing solutions that work rather than focusing on the problem. It is about making small changes that will enable you to reach a goal that you have identified.

The approach is client directed as each client’s needs are different. It is present and future oriented based on the knowledge that change is inevitable and cooperation is essential.

The central philosophy of Solution Focused Brief Therapy is based on three rules:

  1. “If it ain’t broke, DON’T FIX IT!”
  2. Once you know what works, DO IT MORE!
  3. If it doesn’t work, then don’t do it again, DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!
