The Psychological Evaluation Process: What to Expect
Each referral question is unique and we try developing an individualized test battery (a series of psychological tests) to help answer that question based on data. For example, your physician, counselor or teacher may suggest a psychological evaluation to assess for ADHD or another neurodevelopmental condition.
Sometimes, your mental treatment health team may ask for an assessment to help clarify your diagnosis.
After the initial interview is completed, we will develop a specific test battery aimed at answering that referral question. Generally, we will assess cognitive functioning, personality structure, and emotional regulation abilities through written and computer-based tools.
In general, the psychological evaluation is completed over the course of two to three office visits, but this time frame may vary depending on the complexity of the referral question. Once testing is finished, we will provide you with a report of the results and recommendations.
We understand that this process can be intimidating and at times difficult, but we encourage all of our patients to view the psychological evaluation as an opportunity to learn about themselves, to develop insight into their strengths and weaknesses, and then learn how to use that insight effectively in day-to-day life.
